Unit 1.1 - Hardware and Software

Hardware Exploration

 

Objective: To explore and understand the different hardware components of a computer system and their characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages.

 

Materials needed:

- Computers with different hardware components (optional)

- Presentation on the hardware components of a computer system

- Worksheets for students to complete

- Pens and paper

 

Activity steps:

 

1. Introduce the topic of hardware components of a computer system and explain the importance of understanding each component.

 

2. Present the different types of internal and external hardware components including the Central Processing Unit (CPU), processor, motherboard, graphics card, sound card, Network Interface Card (NIC), camera, internal/external storage devices, input and output devices, RAM and ROM.

 

3. Discuss the characteristics, uses, advantages, and disadvantages of each component with the students.

 

4. Provide examples and real-world scenarios where each component is used.

 

5. Hand out worksheets for students to complete. The worksheet should have questions related to the characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of the hardware components discussed.

 

6. Allow students to work individually or in pairs to answer the questions.

 

7. Once completed, discuss the answers as a class and allow students to ask any further questions they may have.

 

8. Conclude the activity by summarizing the importance of understanding hardware components in a computer system and their role in its overall performance.

 

Assessment:

- Completion of the worksheet

- Participation in the class discussion

- Quality of questions asked during the activity

 

Optional:

- Use computers with different hardware components to demonstrate how each component affects the computer's performance.
